The studio will act as a subset of Nickelodeon, too, meaning that the availability of any upcoming TV shows or films on other platforms and streaming services is uncertain. Given the scope of Avatar Studios, though, DiMartino and Konietzko will be acting as co-chief creative officers rather than creative leads. That sounds great for continuity, though we’re hoping the creative team for any future projects includes more diversity – especially East Asian writers – compared to previous seasons of the show. We know that the co-creators of The Last Airbender, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will be heading up the studio. The Legend of Korra (Image credit: Paramount Plus) We could also see the film act as a bridge between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, or indeed a 'what happened next' feature following from the latter series.Īs you can see, it's very speculative at this point, but we expect a mix of returning faces and new settings to capitalize on the Avatar fandom. It could act as a refresher of sorts, revisiting the story of Aang before jumping off into different eras and story threads in follow-up TV series. We really don't know very much about the animated film already in the works at Avatar Studios. We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality” (via ScreenRant). "We’re excited to be back at Nickelodeon where Avatar began, doing what we do best in the biggest way possible. From the start, they’ve supported our ambitious plans and created a positive, proactive environment for us. We are exceedingly grateful to Brian Robbins and Ramsey Naito for their enthusiasm and respect for the Avatar property and us as its stewards. And with this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums.
"We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoy exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do. But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. In a statement released by Nickelodeon, Avatar's creators wrote that: “It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender. Even the son of the cabbage merchant-whose crops Aang accidentally ruined, repeatedly-makes an appearance in The Legend of Korra.Avatar: The Last Airbender (Image credit: Paramount Plus) While a handful of Avatar: The Last Airbender characters show up in The Legend of Korra, the two series has countless connections, including many characters who are the children and grandchildren of Avatar regulars. Wan Shi Tong's library is also the location of another cameo-this one a little morbid-when the owl spirit points out the decaying skeleton of Professor Zei, who stayed behind after Team Avatar's visit to the library. But the spirit returns in The Legend of Korra, this time to aid Aang's granddaughter, Jinora, in her search for portals into the Spirit World. It doesn't go well, since Wan Shi Tong objects to using knowledge in the pursuit of violence. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang and his friends visit Wan Shi Tong's library looking for a way to defeat the Fire Nation. Wan Shi TongĪppearing in the form of a giant owl, Wan Shi Tong is an ancient spirit who watches over an immense Spirit World library that can sometimes be accessed through the mundane world. Driven mad, he is still wandering there, decades later. One of the more obscure returning characters in The Legend of Korra, Zhao was a former nemesis of Zuko's, who killed the Moon spirit in his mortal life, damning him to wander in the Fog of Lost Souls after. Those six are the main returning characters, but there are a handful of additional cameo appearances from Avatar in The Legend of Korra. Iroh also becomes the namesake for Lord Zuko's grandson. He reappears as a Spirit World guide several times over the course of the series.
Decades after the events of Avatar, Iroh left behind his mortal body and entered the Spirit World, where he opened a tea shop. Though he's already old in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko's mentor and former Fire Nation general Iroh makes a surprising appearance in The Legend of Korra.
